Three major mobile platforms that are joining the competitive market today are Symbian, iPhone, and Android. The popularity of iPhone seems to be a little bit left behind Android in 2011 because this Google’s OS is rapidly climbing on top. On the other side, Symbian is predicted to be able on its top position in internation market.

Recently, Android has thoroughly passed Apple and it has become the top smart phone in United States market. Of course it is surprising because Android is even able to passed RIM.

Speaking of Symbian, truly, Symbian is one of popular mobile platform on earth. This platform has become a loyal operating system for mobile phone especially Nokia, the same manufacturer that owns Symbian. In international market, Symbian gained good value because the platform has been selling pretty well.

Almost all Nokia smartphones use Symbian, but there are some models use Maemo, another Nokia’s proprietary operating system. In fact, Nokia hold cooperation with Sony Ericsson to be a vital Symbian hardware partner. In details, Symbian OS is designed as an open operating system, this way many people are allowed to create hardware for this OS.

The similarity between Android and Symbian is both them are open platforms. And to maintain its top-selling in United States, Google doesn’t only manufacture its own phone model which is Nexus One, but also makes contract with HTC to design HTC’s smartphone hardware. This is a good strategy Google carried out to boost its popularity and selling rate.

As Android climbing on top, the predictions iSuppli delivered stated that Android will be superior than iPhone in around 2012. The total smarthphones shipping from Android will reach 75 million, whereas iPhone is predicted to ship 62 million. Compared to last year shipping, Android were only shipping 5 million units, meanwhile iPhone shipped 25 million devices.

The rapid increase of Android shipping is provoked by numerous hardware partnerships between Android and other companies, if it keeps continuing there would be a greater chance for Google to pass Apple in the coming years. Currently, other major phone manufacturers like Motorola, HTC, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Huawei, LG, AsusTek, Dell, and ZTE have planned to use Android on their next mobile phones.

In addition, the wide difference between Apple and Google shows that these companies will have a tight competition. Apple gains revenue from the exclusive partnership between its iPhone and carrier contact, whereas Google put aside the idea of taking much revenue from Android. However, the source revenue for Apple and Google is predicted to shift over several coming years.
